The Significance of Metallic Deoxidizers

Deoxidization is an important process in steel making and it is carried out by including specific range of metals to remove the oxygen content present in steel. Since, presence of oxygen reduces the quality of steel, deoxidization process helps in obtaining the best quality.. However, anti-oxidants are available in different combinations and in powder form. These are them added during the respective processes of manufacturing and they also help in removing the impurities present.

Types of Special Ingredients Applied in Steel and Alloy Manufacturing

There is a long list of special ingredients that stay effective in purification and manufacturing processes. Some of them are,

List of Inter-metallic Ingredients supporting Deoxygenating

Inter-metallic compounds are those that contain silicon therefore they termed as metallic silicides. These are very supportive in optimizing metal products into its pure form.

  • Calcium Silicide : It is one of the prominently chosen deoxidizer and it belongs to the inorganic range of compound. It is available in whitish or dark grey or black in color. It is applied as deoxidizer, desulfurizing agent, degasser for steel, cast-iron, etc. In addition to that, it works as an efficient component in the manufacturing of special metal alloys as it effectively removes phosphorous and keep the purity of main metal.
  • Zirconium silicide : It is one of the excellent additives applied in the manufacturing of hard metals. It also finds an important place in powder metallurgy.
  • Vanadium Powder : It is added to steel during the formation of ferroalloy and it is also added to titanium alloys and in aluminothermic reduction. It is applied in rail steels, forging bars, high temperature steels, spring and heat treated steels, cast iron, etc. If also forms into an excellent combination when added to titanium alloy and applied in gas processing, ceramic , glass and many more industries.
  • Hafnium Carbide : Shows high crystallization temperature and low thermal expansion which makes this component provide high thermal conductivity. It is a kind of alloy that suits best in brass extrusion.
  • Cerium oxide polishing powder : It is a high efficient polishing powder used for polishing different kinds of glasses. It reacts effectively on surfaces and produces cerium oxygen component that is even softer than glass and leaves a final smooth glass surface. This is widely applied in flat type of glasses, LCD, TFT, mirrors, optical glasses, and several other applications where glass is applied.
  • Samarium Powder : It is available as a silvery white metal granule and it exists in minerals including cerite, allanite, etc. When it is exposed in moisture it gets oxidized easily. Though this ingredient is not much applied in metal industry, it has a great role to play in ceramic, glass and electronic industries.
