The powdered WC is mixed with another powdered metal, usually cobalt, and pressed into the desired shape, then heated to temperatures of 1,400º-1,600º C;
The cemented composites of tungsten carbide-cobalt are known by many different trade names, including Widia and Carboloy.
Tungsten Carbide Hardness
Carbides and carbide materials have excellent wear resistance and high hot hardness. They are sometimes referred to as hardmetals, which makes them useful for cutting tools, forming dies, and other wear applications
Tungsten carbide is often referred to as a hard metal due to it’s very high hardness in relation to other metals. Typically a tungsten carbide hard metal can have a hardness value of 1600 HV, whereas mild steel would be in the region of 160 HV a factor of 10 lower.
Tungsten Carbide WC Properties
It is prepared by heating powdered tungsten with carbon black in the presence of hydrogen at 1,400º1,600º C (2,550º-2,900º F).
Carbide also boasts an extremely high density with a hardness second only to diamond, excellent conductivity, all while boasting an overall strength that surpasses that of steel three times over.
This compound is easily molded into many shapes, can be sharpened with precision, and can be melded with or grafted to other metals without issue.
WC Powder Specifications
Tungsten Carbide Powder Application
1. Used as thermal spray powders which provide hard, wear resistant surface tungsten carbide coatings.
2.. The hardness of carbide makes it an attractive alloy to use for crafting rings, pendants, earrings, and other jewelry, but when cut and polished correctly, the material is actually stunningly beautiful as well.
3. Surgical tools are one of the most notable uses for grafted carbide as the stem of the tool is typically made of stainless steel or titanium, while the blade, tip, or end is made from carbide.
4.Used for applications in grinding and milling. Because it is so hard and can be easily molded
5. Can be combined with nickel, iron, silver, and copper to create materials that are utilized in commercial construction applications, electronics, industrial gear making, radiation shielding materials, and the aeronautical industry.
